In 1–4 Maccabees, anonymous ancient Jewish writings explore resistance, loyalty, and survival under Greek rule. According to First Maccabees, Antiochus IV Epiphanes imposes Greek customs on Judea and desecrates the Jerusalem Temple. The priest Mattathias and his sons resist, and Judas Maccabeus leads the struggle to reclaim Jerusalem.
These are separate works, not one continuous history. First Maccabees follows war and the Temple’s rededication; Second turns toward martyrdom and resurrection. Third moves to danger in Egypt under Ptolemy IV Philopator, while Fourth offers a philosophical sermon on reason. Four books, four different kinds of writing
The first thing to know is that the four books are not one work in four volumes. They were written by different people, in different places, for different purposes. First and Second Maccabees both tell of the revolt against the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes in the 160s before the common era. Even so, Second Maccabees is not a sequel to the first. It covers a shorter stretch of time and tells it in its own way.
Third Maccabees has nothing to do with the Maccabees at all. It is set earlier, in Egypt, under a Ptolemaic king, and it tells of a threat to the Jews of Alexandria. Fourth Maccabees is a speech or essay in Greek, built on the martyr stories of the second book. The name Maccabees became a label for the whole group because the group shared themes of persecution, loyalty to the law of Moses, and deliverance.
