About this book
What happens when the promise of civilization hides a hunger for ivory and power?
At dusk on the Thames, Marlow tells his companions about a voyage up the Congo River. Hired to pilot a steamboat for a trading company, he enters a world where European claims of civilization meet the cruelty of empire. Ahead lies Kurtz, a gifted ivory agent whose reputation grows with every story Marlow hears.
In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the journey upriver becomes a search for what lies behind that reputation. A cold manager guards his profits. An accountant keeps spotless books amid suffering. As Marlow grows more curious about Kurtz, the tale asks what happens when greed takes hold and the rules of home fall away.

In short
What could make a sailor give up the open sea for a battered steamboat on a river no one seems to understand? In Heart of Darkness, Marlow does exactly that, and he spends one night on the Thames telling his friends why the trip still troubles him.

A sailor begins his tale at dusk
The book opens on a yacht called the Nellie, anchored in the Thames estuary while the tide waits to turn. Five men sit on deck. One is the unnamed narrator, and one is Marlow, a sailor who sits cross-legged like a Buddha in European clothes.
The narrator describes the old river with respect. Explorers and merchants sailed from here, carrying the sword and sometimes the torch. Then the sun sets, and the gloom over London turns to an ominous glow beneath the stars.
