About this book
What happens when British charm meets a journey across Germany—and the journey turns into a string of comic misadventures?
In Three Men on the Bummel, Jerome K. Jerome brings humour to a journey across Germany. Misadventures take centre stage, with British charm as their companion. The appeal lies in a trip that offers more than places to see: it gives you reasons to laugh along the way.
This is a book for the pleasure of comic travel, where the journey matters as much as the destination. Jerome’s blend of humour and satire invites you to enjoy the mishaps rather than hurry past them. Open it for a change of scene, and stay for the comedy.

In short
Why would two married men scheme to leave their families, and why would one pay for it with a new bathroom, a kitchen stove and a piano? That is how Three Men on the Bummel begins.

Three husbands need an excuse to leave
The book opens with a problem every married man knows. Harris and J. want a holiday without their wives, but neither has the nerve to say so. Each tries to hang the idea on someone else, until George threatens to tell both wives about a family month in a French château.
Then comes the question of where to go. Harris likes the sea, and J. answers with the story of the yacht Rogue. His skipper, Captain Goyles, found a reason every morning not to sail. The wind blew off the land, then from the north, then from the south and east. J. finally sold the stores on Yarmouth sands and went home.

What is Three Men on the Bummel about?
It follows Harris, George and the narrator J. on a bicycle tour of Germany and the Black Forest. The trip is a frame for comic stories about their friends, German customs, bicycles, and the muddles of foreign travel.
What does the word bummel mean?
J. defines it at the end as a journey, long or short, with no particular destination. It must end where it began within a set time, so the traveler is always aware that the sand is running out.
Is Three Men on the Bummel a sequel to Three Men in a Boat?
Yes in spirit. It brings back the same three friends, Harris, George and J., and the same comic style, but trades the Thames for a bicycle tour of Germany. You can enjoy it without knowing the earlier book.
