About this book
What if the path toward calm begins with the thoughts you carry through an ordinary day?
The Dhammapada brings together 423 short verses in 26 chapters, traditionally attributed to the Buddha. Rather than a story or a long argument, it offers small, complete thoughts about the mind, conduct, and freedom from suffering. A cart wheel behind an ox, a scentless flower, and an archer straightening an arrow give its teachings concrete shape.
The opening Twin Verses place contrasting sayings side by side. Heedfulness calls for care and awareness, while Self explores personal responsibility. Thirst examines craving, and The Path presents the Eightfold Path. Read within Theravada Buddhism as scripture, these verses explore how hatred, desire, and habits of mind shape life—and how training may lead toward calm and freedom.

In short
The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 short verses in 26 chapters, spoken in the voice of the Buddha. It is written in Pali, the old language of the early Buddhist scriptures, and it belongs to the Khuddaka Nikaya, the Minor Collection, within the Sutta Pitaka, the basket of discourses.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Everything begins in the mind
The book opens with the Twin Verses, a pair of sayings set side by side for contrast. The first says that mind comes before all things. If a person speaks or acts with an angry or impure thought, suffering follows, as the wheel follows the foot of the ox that pulls the cart. The second says the same about a pure thought, and then happiness follows like a shadow that never leaves.
This is the root idea of the whole collection. Our world is not only made of what happens to us. It is shaped by how we see it and how we respond. The Buddha does not ask for belief here. He asks you to watch your own mind and notice the link between a thought and what comes after it.

What is the Dhammapada about?
It is a collection of 423 short verses on how to live wisely. They cover the power of the mind, kindness, avoiding harm, letting go of craving and following the path toward freedom from suffering.
What does the word Dhammapada mean?
Dhamma is the Pali form of the Sanskrit dharma, meaning teaching or truth. Pada can mean verse or foot and path. So the title is often given as Verses of the Teaching or Footsteps of the Path.
Who wrote the Dhammapada and when?
No author is named. Buddhist tradition says the verses record the Buddha's words, from about the fifth century before the common era, and that early monks gathered them. The Pali version is part of the Pali Canon.
