About this book
What if seeing every side of a question leaves you unable to choose how to live?
In Amiel's Journal, Henri-Frédéric Amiel, a Swiss professor of philosophy in Geneva, turns his attention inward. His private diary follows moods, friendships, lectures and books, alongside his fear of wasting his life. His colleagues see a gifted man who never quite delivers. In these pages, he examines the gap between understanding and action.
Beyond the study, weather moves over the lake and storms gather above the mountains. Amiel watches the light on a winter morning and considers the mood of his own soul. Raised in Geneva's Protestant tradition, he returns to faith and doubt without settling into certainty. The question of how to live stays close throughout.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A lonely scholar in Geneva
Amiel was born in Geneva in 1821 and lost his parents while he was still young. That early loss shaped the solitude that runs through his pages. He grew up in a Protestant city proud of its schools, its watchmakers and its habit of serious thought. He was a bright student, and the city expected much from him.
As a young man he left for a long stay in Germany, mainly in Berlin, where he studied philosophy, history and languages. German thought gave him a large vision of the mind and of history. It also gave him a standard of learning that he later felt he could never meet. He came home to Geneva around 1849 and took a post at the Academy there, first in aesthetics and later in moral philosophy.
