About this book

Can love bridge the distance between a cloth merchant’s daughter and a painter born into privilege?

On the Rue Saint-Denis, an old shop bears a curious sign: a cat playing racket. Here Augustine Guillaume lives under the watchful eyes of parents who value thrift, order and reputation. When the gifted painter Théodore de Sommervieux notices her, a hidden courtship begins, drawing her toward a life far beyond the family shop.

In At the Sign of the Cat and Racket, Honoré de Balzac follows love across the boundaries of education, money and manners. Augustine enters Théodore’s world with joy, but marriage asks more than affection. Beginning with a close look at the house and street, this short novel explores how deeply habits shape what two people expect from life together.

“A writer of the 20th century may also, on occasion, feel imprisoned by his time, and reading the great 19th century novelists – Balzac, Dickens, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky – may bring on a certain nostalgia.”

He is a young painter who has just returned from Rome. He sees Augustine at dinner through the shop window, paints her, and becomes famous for the pictures he shows at the Salon.
