How to find where a quote comes from

  1. Search the words you are surest of, at least six in a row.
  2. Leave out names and numbers you are unsure of.
  3. Check the line in the full text: many famous quotes are shortened or changed over time.

Why quotes are so often credited to the wrong person

A good line travels faster than its source. Writers shorten it, speakers improve it, and a famous name gets attached to it because the name is easier to remember than the book. The only safe check is the text itself: find the line on its page, in its place, and read what comes around it.
