Atmosphere
Literary term · say it AT-muh-sfeer
Atmosphere is the feeling that surrounds a scene or runs through a book. Details of place, weather, sound, and light can make a scene feel peaceful, threatening, cheerful, or sad, even before much happens.
Ways atmosphere appears in books
An unsettling atmosphere
Strange sights, uncertain sounds, or signs of danger make a place feel threatening. The reader may sense that something is wrong before knowing why.
In Dracula, Jonathan Harker arrives at the Count's remote castle after a frightening journey through the mountains. Its isolation and the Count's strange behaviour make his welcome feel unsafe.
In Dracula by Bram Stoker
A peaceful atmosphere
Gentle sounds, familiar surroundings, and unhurried activity can give a scene a feeling of safety and ease.
In The Wind in the Willows, Mole joins Rat for a boat trip and a picnic beside the river. The flowing water, plentiful food, and friendly company give the outing a peaceful atmosphere.
In The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
A festive atmosphere
Lively conversation, food, music, and shared activity can make a scene feel joyful and welcoming.
In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge watches the Christmas party at Fezziwig's warehouse during his visit with the Ghost of Christmas Past. Dancing, food, and warm hospitality fill the scene with cheer.
In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
How to spot atmosphere
- Notice details of light, weather, sound, and surroundings.
- Name the feeling these details suggest.
- Look for changes in that feeling as the scene develops.
What is the difference between atmosphere and mood?
Atmosphere and mood often mean much the same thing in literary discussion. Atmosphere usually points to the feeling surrounding a place or scene, while mood often names the feeling a passage encourages in the reader. The distinction is useful, but not fixed.
Is atmosphere the same as setting?
Atmosphere is the feeling of a scene, while setting is where and when it takes place. The same setting can have different atmospheres: a kitchen might feel welcoming during a family meal but frightening when someone hears an unexplained noise at night.
