About this book
What teaches a poet to see when school teaches him only to long for escape?
In My Reminiscences, Rabindranath Tagore returns to childhood in a crowded Calcutta mansion alive with music, theatre, and talk. Servants rule the nursery, tutors bore him, and family life fills his days. Beyond the classroom, songs, rooftops, and journeys offer a different kind of education.
Tagore follows the pictures memory keeps rather than a steady line of dates. His father, Debendranath, takes him away from Calcutta; his sister-in-law, Kadambari Devi, becomes a close friend. Through these early relationships and discoveries, the memoir explores how a boy begins to find his own voice as a poet.

Memory paints pictures and does not write history
Tagore begins with a puzzle. He does not know who paints the pictures on memory's canvas, but he is sure the painter is no faithful copyist. The painter keeps some things and leaves others out. This is picture making, not history writing.
So two lines run side by side through every life. One is the series of events on the outer face of living. The other is the set of pictures that takes shape within. They match, but they are not the same.

What is My Reminiscences about?
It is Tagore's memoir of his childhood and youth in Calcutta, from servants and schools through his first poems, trips to the Himalayas and England, and the songs and visions of his early manhood.
Is My Reminiscences a true story and when was it written?
Yes, it is a true account by Tagore himself, written in his later years. He calls it a gallery of memory's pictures rather than a strict autobiography, so he chooses scenes for feeling over dates.
What is the Outside that Tagore talks about?
The Outside is his word for the free world beyond the house, glimpsed through shutters and parapet gaps. The chalk circle drawn around him by a servant makes it more alluring, and the idea returns in his poems.
