About this book

Who do you become when war takes away the comfort that has always kept you safe?

In The Rough Road, William John Locke follows a young man whose protected life leaves him little reason to expect hardship. Then the First World War pulls him out of that familiar world. The habits of comfort no longer seem enough. What makes a soldier, and can someone who never expects to fight learn courage?

Love and duty pull in different directions as pressure begins to reshape him. Locke keeps his attention on the person inside the soldier: his beliefs about himself, his affections, and his capacity to change. Gentle humour and a friendly narrator bring warmth to a hard story, asking whether decent feeling can survive when an easy life falls away.

What you’ll discover

  • A sheltered life unsettled Follow a young man beyond the protection that once shields him from hard decisions.
  • The question of courage Explore whether bravery is something a person can learn under the pressure of war.
  • Love beside duty Discover how affection helps shape a man whose life no longer follows its expected course.
  • Humour in hard times Find warmth in Locke's gentle humour without losing sight of the hardship his character faces.
  • Change from within Watch hardship test the distance between who someone believes he is and who he becomes.

Who will love it

You will enjoy this if you like gentle humor, characters who grow, wartime love stories, and the question of how an ordinary person finds courage.

A boy raised like a toy dog

Doggie Trevor is no hero. He is the child of elderly parents in the cathedral town of Durdlebury. His father dies early, and his mother, who has more affection than sense, wraps him in cotton wool for twenty-one years.
