About this book
A boy who loves detective stories faces a real crime—and his own uncle falls under suspicion.
Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn travel to Arkansas to stay with Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas Phelps. But their visit brings more than farm life. A serious crime nearby puts gentle Uncle Silas in danger, and Tom takes on a mystery that matters to a family he loves.
In Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer, Detective, Huck tells the story with plain words and loyal admiration for his friend. Tom studies the facts, notices what does not fit, and works toward his own explanation. The action leads into the courtroom, where his love of detective stories meets trouble far beyond a boyhood game.

Spring fever sends the boys south
The story opens with Huck describing spring fever. The frost is leaving the ground, and a boy sits on a hill above the Mississippi wishing for something he cannot name. Huck says the cure is to get away and see strange places. He and Tom have the fever badly, and Tom is sure Aunt Polly will never let him leave school.
Then Aunt Polly comes out with a letter. Aunt Sally in Arkansas is in trouble and wants Tom and Huck to cheer the family up. Huck is ready to leap for joy, but Tom sits like a rock and says he must be excused for now. Huck is furious until Tom whispers why. If Aunt Polly sees how badly he wants to go, she will start imagining dangers and take the offer back. It works, because her pride does the rest.

What is Tom Sawyer, Detective about?
Tom and Huck travel by steamboat to Arkansas, meeting a disguised thief with stolen diamonds along the way. When a killing and an arrest follow, Tom tries to prove his gentle uncle innocent by reading small clues.
Do I need to read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn first?
No. Huck explains who Tom is, who Uncle Silas is and what happened to Jim the summer before. The story stands on its own, though earlier books add extra pleasure for returning readers.
Is Tom Sawyer, Detective a true story?
Mark Twain says in a note that the incidents come from an old Swedish criminal trial. He changed the people and set the scenes in America, so the plot has real roots but the characters are his own.
