About this book

What if the wider world you long for only makes you more blind to yourself?

Theron Ware arrives in Octavius, upstate New York, sure that his life as a Methodist minister is on the rise. His wife, Alice, shares his modest home and faith. But his new church has practical demands, and its trustees care more about avoiding debt and trouble than admiring their preacher.

Then Father Forbes, Dr. Ledsmar and Celia Madden draw Theron toward a world of learning, music and bold ideas. He begins to measure his wife and congregation against these dazzling acquaintances. In Harold Frederic's novel, the hunger to grow becomes tangled with vanity, and new opinions can look dangerously like wisdom.

What you’ll discover

  • A mind deceiving itself Stay close to Theron's thoughts as Frederic quietly exposes the gaps in his judgment.

  • Faith under pressure Explore what happens when a sincere man's beliefs meet questions he has never faced.
  • Church life beyond sermons Enter a world of stubborn trustees, fundraising and preachers competing to stir a camp meeting.
  • Humor with sharp edges Feel the sting of Frederic's dry amusement as ambition and self-deception come into view.
