About this book

Behind a Tyrolean town’s good manners, ambition and desire have lives of their own.

In The Town on the Inn, Rudolf Greinz turns toward a small community in the Austrian Tyrol. The river and the Alpine landscape give this world its setting. Customs and quarrels shape daily life, while ambition raises questions about what people want from the place they call home.

The town has a public face of church, trade and good manners. Beneath it lie desires and private lives. Greinz’s fiction draws on the mountain country he knows, against a background of change: old village ways meet new trade, tourism and ideas from outside. How do people live close together and still keep their secrets?

A beaten girl leaves the Karrner camp

The novel opens on a gray autumn day in Rattenberg, a narrow old town squeezed between a castle hill and the flooding river Inn. A band of Karrner arrives, led by Gaudenz Keil, a grim tinker who beats a drum through the downpour. Behind him walks his stepdaughter Sophie, about twelve, dressed as a boy and leading a ribboned pony with her little brother Tonl on its back.
