About this book

What if your honeymoon takes you beyond Earth, with the whole solar system waiting outside?

In A Honeymoon in Space, a newly married couple leave Earth in a vessel of their own. Their wedding trip becomes a tour of the worlds around the Sun. George Chetwynd Griffith joins romance and adventure as the travellers exchange familiar sights for strange skies, carrying their new marriage far from home.

The journey tests more than their courage. In close quarters, beyond familiar rules, the couple face one trial after another. Along the way, Griffith blends travel writing with astronomy lessons and a Victorian dream of invention. The Moon and planets reveal how people around 1900 imagine other worlds, while the adventure explores science’s promise and its possible misuse.

What you’ll discover

  • A wedding trip without limits Follow newlyweds who choose the sky over an ordinary holiday, turning romance into exploration.
  • Worlds along the way Visit the solar system as Griffith imagines it, with each world another stop on the tour.
  • Love far from home Watch a new marriage meet unfamiliar trials, where companionship matters as much as courage.
  • The daring of invention Explore a vision of science that opens frontiers while leaving room for the misuse of power.
  • Yesterday’s imagined future Step into early science fiction, where long descriptions bring imagined moons and planets within reach.

What is A Honeymoon in Space about?

It follows Lord Redgrave and his bride Zaidie as they tour the Solar System in an airship called the Astronef, visiting the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter's moons and Saturn, and meeting strange peoples and creatures on each.

What is the Astronef and how does it fly?

The Astronef is a metal and glass vessel built from Professor Rennick's ideas. It uses the R. Force, a repulsive form of gravity, so a wheel can cancel weight and let the ship rise, drop or cross space.

Who is Murgatroyd in A Honeymoon in Space?

Andrew Murgatroyd is the engineer, a devout Yorkshireman whose family has served the Redgraves for seven hundred years. He tends the engines and speaks plainly, worrying that the trip tempts Providence.
