About this book
What if Earth is only the starting point for understanding life, the soul, and our place among the stars?
In Urania, French astronomer and writer Camille Flammarion turns the heavens into a journey of imagination. Urania, the ancient Greek muse of astronomy, guides the human mind beyond Earth toward distant worlds. Our small planet circles one ordinary star among countless others, and that vast scale changes how human life looks.
This science fiction story brings the science of the stars into contact with questions about the soul and what may follow death. Flammarion imagines a universe where other planets may carry other kinds of life. The journey asks readers to consider whether our place in the cosmos reaches beyond the world we know.

A bronze Muse turns a clerk into a dreamer
At seventeen, the narrator is in love with Urania, the Muse of astronomy, though she is only a statue. She stands on a bronze clock in the study of Le Verrier, the director of the Paris Observatory.
The narrator spends his afternoons on dull sums, correcting the night's observations of stars while his mind drifts. Around four o'clock he peeks into the study to see whether the director is away. Then he stands before the little figure. One evening he moves a lamp and watches her face change from grave to thoughtful to tender. The director walks in and asks, with plain scorn, whether he might be a poet.
