About this book

What if everyone knows how a prince should behave, but no one knows the person beneath the ceremony?

In Thomas Mann’s Royal Highness, Klaus Heinrich lives on display in a small German grand duchy. He learns when to enter, what to say, and when to leave. His elder brother, Grand Duke Albrecht, is in poor health, and their state is short of money. Duty leaves little room for a private self.

Then Samuel Spoelmann, a wealthy American, arrives with his daughter Imma. Clever and independent, she views the court with curiosity rather than awe. Her presence brings a different gaze into Klaus Heinrich’s carefully ordered world. With gentle irony and real feeling, Mann explores loneliness, public roles, and the first signs of love.

A prince is born with a small flaw

The birth takes place at Grimmburg, the castle where every child of the reigning couple must be born. Twice in fifteen generations a prince was born elsewhere, and both came to a bad end. So seventy-two shots announce a second son to Grand Duke Johann Albrecht and his wife Dorothea.

What is Royal Highness by Thomas Mann about?

It follows Klaus Heinrich, the younger son of a Grand Duke, who is born with a withered left hand and spends his life representing a bankrupt little state until he meets Imma, the daughter of an American billionaire.

Who is Klaus Heinrich and why does his hand matter?

He is the second son of the ruling family. His stunted left hand is hidden in public and links him to an old prophecy about a one-handed prince who will bring happiness.

What does the rosebush in the Old Palace courtyard mean?

It blooms beautifully but smells of decay, and a popular saying promises it will one day smell sweet. It stands for the state's hidden troubles and the hope of better times.
