About this book
What does ambition cost when money, friendship and power all make claims on your judgment?
In The Essays or Counsels, Civil and Moral, Francis Bacon turns a statesman's watchful eye on daily life. Truth, death, love, envy and friendship become subjects for short, concentrated thought. He knows courts and high office from within, and asks what helps people act wisely when their hopes, duties and desires pull in different directions.
The collection moves from the private mind to the government of kingdoms. Of Truth examines our uneasy relationship with honesty; Of Friendship considers companionship and judgment; Of Great Place weighs the demands of power. In Of Studies, Bacon turns to learning itself. His sentences pack advice into little space, offering ideas to test rather than a smooth argument to follow.

“Bacon, Locke and Newton. I consider them as the three greatest men that have ever lived, without any exception, and as having laid the foundation of those superstructures which have been raised in the Physical and Moral sciences”
In short
What do a joking Pilate, a dying Roman emperor, and a gardener laying out thirty acres of lawn, heath, and flower beds have in common? They all appear in the Essays of Francis Bacon.

Truth is the highest good of the mind
Bacon opens with Pilate asking what truth is and walking away before anyone can reply. Some people enjoy doubt and call it freedom of thought. Others love the lie itself, even when it brings them neither pleasure nor profit. He admits he cannot explain why.
He gives falsehood its due. Truth is plain daylight, but candlelight flatters the masks and pageants of the world. Strip away vain opinions and flattering hopes, he says, and many minds would be small, gloomy things. Then he turns the argument around. Searching for truth is its courtship, knowing it is its presence, and believing it is its enjoyment, and together these are the highest good of human nature.
