About this book
What happens when wealth no longer needs to persuade—and begins to rule by force?
In Jack London's The Iron Heel, Avis Everhard leaves the safety of her father's university world to test a working man's claims. Ernest Everhard challenges bishops, professors, and bankers with arguments she cannot dismiss. As Avis follows the evidence into the lives of the poor, her growing love for Ernest draws her toward a struggle over who holds power.
Avis tells her story in a secret manuscript, discovered seven centuries later. Anthony Meredith, a scholar in that distant age, adds his calm explanations beside her urgent account. This frame brings a love story and a political thriller together, while London asks whether a free society can survive when wealth gathers into a few hands.
