About this book

What if the people you trust most are the people you understand least?

At Nauheim, a German spa town, John and Florence Dowell meet Edward and Leonora Ashburnham. The American and English couples seem united by good manners and lasting friendship. For nine years, John trusts what he sees. Beneath that calm surface, hidden aims and strained marriages put love, trust and dignity at risk.

In The Good Soldier, Ford Madox Ford lets John tell the story as he struggles to understand it. He circles back, corrects himself and admits uncertainty. Florence conceals her aims; Edward tries to follow a code of honour; Leonora fights for her marriage. You must look beyond John's account to find what his trust keeps him from seeing.

What you’ll discover

  • A narrator to question Follow John's shifting account and weigh what he understands against what he fails to notice.
  • Good manners, hidden lives Look beneath the couples' polished behaviour, where respectability offers no promise of honesty.
  • Honour under pressure Meet Edward Ashburnham, whose generosity and sentiment sit beside his efforts to live honourably.
  • A marriage worth defending Watch proud, devout Leonora struggle to preserve both her marriage and her dignity.
  • The limits of trust Explore how love, money, religion and deceit shape a story no single account can settle.

Who will love it

A man who knows nothing begins to tell

The book opens with a confession of ignorance. Dowell says he and Florence knew the Ashburnhams for nine seasons and yet knew nothing at all about them. He blames the English habit of keeping everything unsaid.

What is The Good Soldier about?

It follows two couples, the American Dowells and the English Ashburnhams, who spend nine summers together at the spa town of Nauheim. The narrator slowly explains the affairs, money troubles and religious pressures hidden beneath their perfect manners.

Who is the narrator of The Good Soldier?

John Dowell, a rich American from Philadelphia, tells the story. He is gentle and honest about his feelings but knows very little of what goes on around him, which is why careful readers learn to question what he says.

Why is The Good Soldier called an unreliable narrator story?

Dowell misreads nearly everyone, contradicts himself, and tells events out of order. He means to be honest, but he sees only part of the picture. Readers fill the gaps, and that gives the book its tension.
