About this book

What can beauty do in a world shaken by revolution, repression, and cruelty?

In The Created Legend, Fyodor Sologub brings together politics, poetry, science, dream, and fairy tale. At its centre stands Trirodov, a poet and chemist who is also something like a magician. Around him, Russian society is divided and anxious. His strange combination of gifts opens a question: can imagination answer the violence of daily life?

The unrest of the 1905 revolution hangs over this Symbolist novel. Sologub turns toward the wish at its heart: life need not remain only what a harsh world makes it. Beauty becomes a way to confront cruelty. Everyday politics meets dream, and the boundary between scientific thought and poetic invention grows less certain.

  • Dream beside politics Follow a strange blend of everyday concerns, fairy tale, science, and poetic imagination.
