About this book
What if the person who loves you most sees a beauty you cannot believe you possess?
Among the mines and green hills of northern Spain, Marianela guides Pablo Penáguilas through a world he cannot see. She is a poor orphan who believes she is too plain to be loved. He is gentle, educated, and devoted to her. From her voice and companionship, he imagines a beauty that she cannot recognize in herself.
In Benito Pérez Galdós's short novel, love meets the promise of science when eye surgeon Teodoro Golfín arrives. Pablo's father hopes his son will gain sight and a settled place in society. His cousin Florentina is kind, beautiful, and the family's hoped-for bride. For Nela, these hopes sharpen a painful question: what makes someone worthy of love?

A lost traveler meets a blind guide
At dusk in northern Spain, Teodoro Golfin, a good-natured eye surgeon, is walking to the mines of Socartes, where his brother Cárlos is the engineer. He is hopelessly lost in a hollow of red earth. Then he hears a girl sing, and a young man calls to a dog named Choto.
The voice offers to lead him across the mines. When the moon rises, Golfin sees that his guide is blind. The boy says without sorrow that he knows the world through touch, hearing, and imagination. He walks the tunnels like a man in his own house, past stones that stand like frozen giants, and beside La Trascava, a pit said to have no bottom. At the end a tiny girl runs up with a cloak. The boy is Pablo Penáguilas, and she is his guide.

What is Marianela about?
It tells of Nela, a plain orphan who guides a blind boy named Pablo through the mining country of northern Spain. Their close friendship is tested when a surgeon offers Pablo the chance to see.
Who is Nela in Marianela?
Nela, short for Marianela, is a small, thin orphan who lives with the mine overseer's family. She has never been taught anything, yet she has a warm heart and rich imagination, and she is Pablo's guide.
When was Marianela written and is it a true story?
Galdós published it in 1878. It is a work of fiction, though it draws on real concerns of its time, such as poverty, the mines of northern Spain, and the lack of education for the poor.
