About this book
What if the desert is not empty, but a country whose signs you have yet to learn?
In The Land of Little Rain, Mary Austin explores eastern California through short sketches of its land, creatures, and people. Between the Sierra Nevada and the hot basins to the east, she follows water through a dry world of high canyons, salt flats, old trails, and small towns.
Austin watches animals find their paths and plants wait years for rain. She meets prospectors, solitary walkers, and Seyavi, a Paiute basket maker who supports herself and her son. These encounters reveal how people live within the land's limits, and how patient attention makes a seemingly barren country come alive.

“The land, not the law, sets the limit.”
In short
What does a land with almost no rain teach a person who stays long enough? Mary Austin spent years learning the answer in the dry country east of the Sierra Nevada in California.

The desert follows rain, not the calendar
Austin opens by naming the country. The Country of Lost Borders stretches south from the Panamint and Amargosa ranges, on the eastern side of the Sierras. She prefers that name to the word desert, since desert only means land that holds no people.
The year has three seasons. From June to November the land is hot and still and broken by violent storms. Then comes a chilly, quiet stretch. From April it blossoms. Even these dates bend, because the land sets its seasons by the rain.

What is The Land of Little Rain about?
It is a set of linked sketches of the dry country east of the Sierra Nevada in California. Austin writes about its animals, plants, weather, and people, including Paiute and Shoshone families, miners, shepherds, and villagers.
Is The Land of Little Rain a true story?
It is nonfiction based on the author's years in eastern California. The places and many of the people are real, though Austin uses descriptive names and withholds locations to protect her intimacy with the land.
Who is Seyavi in The Land of Little Rain?
Seyavi is a Paiute basket maker who raises her son alone after her people's last stand. Austin admires her skill, her quail-pattern cooking bowls, and her dry wit, and she gives her a whole chapter.
