About this book
What if the wood beyond the fields holds a kingdom—and you can finally understand its voices?
In Richard Jefferies’s Wood Magic, Bevis spends his days outdoors in the English countryside. Then he gains the gift of understanding the wild creatures around him. Fields and woods become more than scenery: they hold lives, schemes and rivalries that adults scarcely notice. Among the birds and beasts stands Kapchack, a proud, clever magpie who behaves like a king.
But this animal kingdom shares its ground with people. Farmers, keepers and guns bring dangers that Bevis begins to see from the creatures’ side. Jefferies sets these tensions beside close observations of birds, beasts and weather. The story moves slowly, pausing for a bird in flight, a spring hedge or rain on leaves, inviting you to look and listen with care.

A boy leaves the garden and finds a talking world
Bevis begins the book alone in the farmhouse garden, tearing up a daisy and chewing grass until his teeth turn green. He is a restless child who cannot keep still. When a bumblebee buzzes past, Bevis understands every word.
The old toad under the rhubarb box tells him of a proud spider. The toad flatters the spider into spinning a huge new web in the summerhouse window. The spider grows fat, and a robin eats him in an instant.
