About this book

What if the strength to fall in love is not the strength to stand by it?

Alone in Saint Petersburg, Dmitri Sanin finds a small cross set with garnets among his old papers. It carries him back to a summer in Frankfurt, where a cry for help draws his younger self into an Italian confectioner's shop. There he meets Gemma Roselli, a proud young woman engaged to a man she does not love.

Sanin wants to build a life with Gemma, but generous feelings offer no guarantee of firm resolve. An officer's insult leads him to challenge the man to a duel on her behalf. Around this love story, Ivan Turgenev brings together a warm, anxious family, a respectable rival, and Maria Nikolaevna Polozov, a wealthy woman who enjoys testing other people's will.

What is The Torrents of Spring about?

The title story follows a young Russian nobleman, Dimitri Sanin, who meets a confectioner's daughter in Frankfurt in 1840. It is about sudden first love, a duel fought for her honor and a choice made under temptation.

Is The Torrents of Spring a true story?

It is fiction, set in Germany and Russia in 1840 and roughly thirty years later. Turgenev wrote it in the later part of his career, drawing on his knowledge of the places and people of the age, but its characters are invented.

What stories are in this collection?

Besides the title novella, the book holds First Love, about a sixteen-year-old's passion for his neighbor in 1833, and Mumu, about a deaf and mute serf who rescues a puppy in Moscow. Each stands alone.
