About this book

What if the voice you trust most is the one you should fear?

On a quiet Pennsylvania estate, Clara Wieland shares a peaceful life with her brother Theodore, his wife Catharine, and their friend Henry Pleyel. Then voices sound in the dark with no speaker in sight. A stranger named Carwin enters their circle, and the familiar world begins to feel unsafe.

In Wieland; Or, The Transformation: An American Tale, Charles Brockden Brown brings gothic dread to American farmland. Clara tries to make sense of what she sees and hears, while faith and reason offer no sure shelter. Theodore's devotion and Pleyel's confidence in his judgment raise a troubling question: what happens when belief becomes certainty?

In short

Picture a small temple on a rock above the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia. Twelve columns hold up a dome, and each midnight a man climbs there alone to pray.
