About this book

What if nature holds powers that turn a laboratory into a place of dread?

In Strange Forces, Leopoldo Lugones brings science, myth and the occult onto the same stage. A scientist pursues a hidden power in nature. In Yzur, a stubborn experimenter tries to teach a monkey to speak, convinced that apes choose silence to escape work. The search for knowledge becomes an encounter with something no one fully understands.

The Horses of Abdera turns an old Greek legend into a city's struggle with its own prized animals. The Rain of Fire retells the biblical destruction of Gomorrah as cosmic horror. After the tales, a closing essay presents Lugones's account of the universe's beginnings through a series of lessons, carrying the collection's questions from strange creatures to the cosmos.

What is Strange Forces about?

It is a collection of twelve tales and one cosmological essay by Leopoldo Lugones. Many tales follow a person who chases a hidden force, such as sound, light, thought or the power of suggestion, and meets its consequences.

What is the Omega Force?

It is the name an inventor gives to the mechanical power of sound, in the opening tale. A small box of four tuning forks makes a wave that pierces matter, and only its maker seems able to aim it.

Is Strange Forces science fiction or horror?

It is both, and also fantasy and legend. Lugones wrote it in the early twentieth century, mixing real science of his day with ghostly, ancient and dreamlike elements, so it is often seen as an early landmark of science fiction.
