About this book
Every mountain road brings strangers, and every stranger may hide a purpose.
In Karl May’s Through the Land of the Skipetars, Kara Ben Nemsi rides through the Ottoman Balkans with his loyal friend Hadschi Halef Omar. The German traveler tells his own story as they cross mountain country where a quarrel may wait along any road.
Merchants, guides, soldiers and wanderers cross their path, but appearances offer little certainty. A chase and hidden motives keep the travelers wary. Kara Ben Nemsi trusts his own sense of right: wrongdoing must be answered, and the weak deserve protection. The danger tests both judgment and resolve.

In short
Would you believe in a holy man who cures the sick, until a stranger tears open his kaftan in front of the whole town? That is how this adventure begins, in a courtyard lit by burning oil in the Balkan town of Ostromdscha.

A false saint is exposed before the crowd
In Ostromdscha, Kara Ben Nemsi and his friends are called before a court. The town honors the Mubarek as a holy man and miracle worker. The judge, the Kodscha Bascha, has already condemned Halef to the whip without hearing him.
The traveler does not wait to be judged. He takes the judge's chair himself. When the crowd grows angry, he seizes the Mubarek and tears open his kaftan. Folding crutches hang inside, with a gray wig, a tin of flour for whitening the face, and two rubber balls for padding the cheeks.
