About this book
A fortune vanishes from Tower Mansion, and the person under suspicion is someone the Hardy boys know.
In seaside Bayport, Frank and Joe Hardy want to follow their detective father, Fenton Hardy, into real cases. When jewels and other valuables disappear from a grand house, the brothers find their chance. But this theft reaches into their own circle, and solving it means more than finding stolen treasure.
Frank weighs the clues; Joe is eager to act. With their loyal, funny friend Chet Morton, they follow tracks, question people, and compare notes. Police chief Collig leads the official search, while the boys face a troubling question: does evidence that looks convincing always point to the right person?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Two brothers and a detective father
The story opens in Bayport, a town on the coast of the United States where the Hardy family lives. Frank is the older brother, and Joe is a year younger. They are quick, loyal and curious, and they share one great ambition. They want to become detectives like their father.
Fenton Hardy used to work for the police in New York and now takes private cases that carry him far from home. His reputation is large, and the boys feel both pride in it and pressure from it. They study how he thinks, and they often hear his advice about noticing small things. A detective, as he shows them, looks at what others pass by.
