About this book
What if the love you cannot resist threatens the honor you most want to protect?
At the glittering court of King Henri II, ambition and love affairs fill every room. The young Princess of Cleves arrives with her mother’s lessons firmly in mind: virtue matters more than pleasure. She marries the Prince of Cleves, an honorable man she respects but does not love.
Then a dance at a royal ball brings her face to face with the Duke of Nemours. Charming, brave and admired, he awakens feelings she cannot command. In The Princess of Cleves, Madame de La Fayette follows glances, silences and small decisions as a young woman struggles between passion and duty.

A glittering court shapes a guarded young heiress
The story opens in the final years of Henry II's reign, when the French court shines with beauty, music, tournaments, and rivalry. The king loves the older Diana of Poitiers, Duchess of Valentinois, and she holds great power over him. Love and business are tangled so tightly that nobody can tell where one ends.
Into this world comes a girl of sixteen, one of the richest heiresses in France. Her mother, Madame de Chartres, has raised her in the country and shaped her intelligence and virtue. Unlike most mothers, she speaks openly of love, then lays out its dangers, the falseness of men and the misery of a wrong attachment. She asks to hear about every flirtation her daughter meets, and offers advice as a friend.
