About this book
Love, faith, death, and rebellion meet in a hundred poems that trace the changing voice of Spanish lyric poetry.
In The One Hundred Best Poems of the Spanish Language, scholar and critic Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo chooses a path through centuries of Castilian verse. His selection moves from the late Middle Ages through the Golden Age to the nineteenth-century Romantics. Love, nature, faith, death, and country give you threads to follow across these changing poetic worlds.
Jorge Manrique’s Coplas reflects on his father’s death. Lope de Vega writes of love and faith, while Luis de Góngora draws you into dense images and intricate language. The later Romantic poets turn toward freedom, wild adventure, rebellion, and personal feeling. Together, these voices offer a first map of a rich poetic tradition, shaped by one scholar’s choices.

Manrique and the ballads open the book
The book begins with a light song about a herder from Finojosa. A traveler loses his way between Calatraveno and Santa Maria and sees a girl watching her flock in a green meadow. He says she is lovelier than the roses of spring. When he asks where the herder is, she answers with a smile that she has no wish to love.
Then comes Jorge Manrique's lament for his father, Don Rodrigo Manrique. It says that our lives are rivers flowing into the sea, which is death. There the mighty and the humble become equal. Manrique asks where King Don Juan and the ladies with their perfumes have gone. He praises his father as a friend to friends and a lion to the fierce. When Death comes to his door in Ocana, the old knight accepts it calmly.
