About this book
What if learning to see the world means facing everything you fear?
Malte Laurids Brigge is young, Danish, poor, and alone in Paris. The last of an old family, he chooses to write. From his small room on rue Toullier, his attention turns to streets and hospitals, illness and death. He tries to look closely enough to put what he sees into words.
In Rainer Maria Rilke’s only novel, short notebook entries replace chapters and a steady plot. Paris gives way to childhood houses in Denmark, memories of Malte’s parents, and the warmth of his aunt Abelone. Fear follows him across these fragments, alongside unanswered love and a searching question: how does a writer learn to see truly?

Paris greets Malte as a city of dying
The book opens with Malte walking through Paris and observing scenes of illness and distress. He would have thought it a place where people come to die. He finds a place where they seem to come to die. He checks his map for a maternity house and a military hospital, then notices an unmapped night shelter.
He notes the smells, a blend of iodoform, fried potatoes and fear. At night trams, breaking glass and shrieking voices crash through his open window. A rooster at dawn comforts him like an old friend.

What is The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge about?
It follows Malte, a young Danish poet in Paris, as he records street scenes, childhood memories and portraits of the past. It is a book about fear, death, love and learning to see clearly.
Is Malte Laurids Brigge a real person?
No, Malte is an invented character, though he shares experiences with Rilke, such as living in Paris. The book is a novel, not a diary, and Rilke finished it in 1910.
How is the book arranged?
It is made of entries that move between observations, memories, historical portraits and reflections. A street scene may be followed by a childhood memory or a portrait of a king. You can read it entry by entry and enjoy each one as its own piece.
