About this book

What is a knight’s honor worth when noble words conceal ruthless deeds?

At the end of the fourteenth century, Poland and the Teutonic Order edge toward war. In Henryk Sienkiewicz’s The Knights of the Cross, Zbyszko of Bogdaniec longs to prove his courage. But when the young knight attacks a protected envoy, his hunger for glory puts him in danger.

His love for Danusia draws him into her father Jurand’s bitter feud with the Order. Beside him stands Macko, his experienced uncle, intent on restoring their family estate. At Bogdaniec, resourceful Jagienka offers a different future. As private grievances meet a widening conflict, love, family, and loyalty pull Zbyszko in competing directions.

What you’ll discover

What is The Knights of the Cross about?

It tells of a young Polish nobleman, Zbyszko, who makes a vow to a girl named Danusia and finds himself in conflict with the Teutonic Order. The story moves from inns and royal courts to forests, castles and the wilderness of Zmudz.

Who are the Knights of the Cross in the book?

They are the Teutonic Knights, a military and religious order with castles in Prussia. In the novel they wear white mantles with red crosses and are shown as powerful, polished and treacherous neighbors of Poland and Mazowsze.

Is The Knights of the Cross a true story?

It is historical fiction. Sienkiewicz used real events such as the Order's wars against Lithuania and Poland, the reign of Jagiello and the setting around 1400, but Zbyszko, Danusia, Jurand and the main plot are invented.
