About this book
A beach strewn with bodies, a hillside of goats, a storm at sea: love begins in very different places.
The Greek Romances of Heliodorus, Longus and Achilles Tatius gathers ancient tales of desire and danger. In Heliodorus’s The Ethiopics, a mystery on the Egyptian coast opens the story of Charicleia and Theagenes. Their love begins at a festival in Delphi, but their devotion faces trials across the Mediterranean and Egypt.
Longus’s Daphnis and Chloe turns to two foundlings growing up among goats and vines on Lesbos, bewildered by first love. Achilles Tatius’s The Loves of Clitopho and Leucippe gives the lover himself the telling: quick, odd and witty. Across these stories, rivals, separation and danger test young lovers, while each writer gives romance a different shape.

A beach of the dead opens the story
The Ethiopics opens in the middle of things, with no one to explain. At sunrise, pirates climb a hill above the Nile mouth and look down on a ship at anchor and a beach covered with bodies. Tables, cups and food lie among the dead, and the cargo has not been touched.
Then they notice a girl on a rock, with laurel on her head and a bow under her arm. She is Chariclea, and she watches a badly wounded young man, Theagenes. The pirates take her for a goddess, until they see her weep and kiss his wounds.

What are the three Greek romances about?
Each tells of young lovers who meet, are parted by pirates, storms and rivals, and stay faithful. The Ethiopics crosses Egypt, Daphnis and Chloe stays on Lesbos, and Clitophon and Leucippe travels from Tyre to Ephesus.
Are the Greek romances true stories?
No, they are invented tales, written in Greek in the Roman era. They borrow real places such as Delphi, Memphis, Alexandria and Ephesus, but the characters, events and wonders belong to the authors imagination.
Who are Daphnis and Chloe?
They are two foundlings on Lesbos. A goat nurses Daphnis, a ewe nurses Chloe, and shepherds raise them. They grow up tending flocks, and a kiss deepens their desire before they understand what their feelings mean.
