About this book
What does duty mean when a sailor who takes part in the slave trade becomes a defender of his home town?
Joachim Nettelbeck leaves Kolberg, a Baltic port in Pomerania, for a life at sea. From deckhand to officer and captain, he faces storms, shipwreck, ice, hunger and hard masters. His memoir brings you close to the work of sailing, where a captain's whims can make an already dangerous voyage harder.
Across the Atlantic, the account enters darker waters: Nettelbeck serves on ships carrying enslaved Africans to the Caribbean. His story demands an uncomfortable look at his own part in that trade. Back in Kolberg, the focus turns to citizenship and duty as French forces threaten his home town in 1807.

A boy who builds boats becomes a sailor
Nettelbeck is born in Kolberg in 1738, the son of a respected brewer and distiller. His grandparents raise him from the age of nine months, and by the time he can talk he wants to be a sailor. He carves little boats from wood chips and bark, gives them sails of feathers or paper, and floats them in gutters and on the Persante river.
In a famine year, he carries bowls of kale and bread to starving people from the countryside, and old and young snatch the bowls from his hands. The next year, King Frederick sends potatoes to town. Nobody knows what to do with them, and people toss them to dogs. Later an official teaches proper planting, and famine never again strikes so widely.
