About this book
What does a life of duty look like when its storyteller keeps a taste for adventure and good humour?
In The Chronicles of a Gay Gordon, J. M. Gordon looks back on a British army career that takes him far from home. Scotland, Spain, Ireland, Australia and the battlefields of empire frame this brigadier-general’s recollections. Duty shapes his life, but travel, friendship and a cheerful outlook give these memories their personal character.
The title carries a Scottish echo: the Gordon clan, the Gordon Highlanders and the older meaning of “gay” as cheerful and carefree. Gordon tells his story with a light touch. This is a soldier’s remembered world, not a strict academic campaign history, and his perspective reflects the attitudes of his class and age.

A Scottish laird's family grows up in Spain
Gordon explains his odd birthplace by going back to a law that forced Scottish Catholic landowners to give up their Church or lose their land. His great-grandfather gave in and kept the estate of Wardhouse in Aberdeenshire. His younger brother James Arthur feared that cash might be confiscated next, so he took his money to southern Spain.
In Andalusia James Arthur made white sherry and prospered. His nephew John David joined the firm and raised a large family there.
