About this book

What happens when the artist you love becomes the target of your fiercest criticism?

Friedrich Nietzsche turns against Richard Wagner, the composer who was once his friend and hero. In The Case of Wagner, admiration gives way to a sharp quarrel over music, morality and health. This is more than an attack on an artist: it is a philosopher testing what his own former devotion means.

Nietzsche Contra Wagner gathers passages from earlier books, while the selected aphorisms offer brief, hard-edged thoughts on art and the modern age. Along the way, Nietzsche praises Georges Bizet's Carmen, challenges Wagner's musical powers and explores what he calls decadence. You do not need a deep knowledge of opera to enter the argument.

What you’ll discover

  • A friendship under strain Follow a quarrel where personal devotion makes the philosophical attack feel all the more charged.
  • Carmen as a cure Discover why Nietzsche turns to Bizet's opera for music that lifts his spirits.
  • Small effects, sharp accusations Consider Nietzsche's claim that Wagner excels at small effects rather than building musical forms.
  • The question of decadence Explore how Nietzsche connects exhaustion in music and writing with the condition of the body.
  • Thought in brief blows Meet aphorisms that compress Nietzsche's thinking into a few hard-edged lines.

Wagner was the illness Nietzsche had to survive

The Case of Wagner begins with a confession. Nietzsche says that turning away from Wagner was a matter of fate. Few people, he claims, had been more tangled up in Wagnerism, and few had felt such joy at escaping.

What is The Case of Wagner about?

It is a witty pamphlet from 1888 in which Nietzsche argues that Wagner is an actor and a decadent whose music stimulates tired nerves. He sets Bizet's Carmen against Wagner as a model of clear, healthy art.

Why does Nietzsche praise Bizet's Carmen?

He finds in Carmen lightness, precision and southern clarity. It treats the listener as intelligent, presents love as fate and nature, and makes him feel more alive, which is his test of good art.

Did Nietzsche really turn against Wagner suddenly?

No. The 1911 preface points to earlier writings and to notes from 1878 where Nietzsche already doubts Wagner. The 1888 pamphlets gather and sharpen criticisms he had held for years, after an earlier friendship.
