About this book
What makes people leave home for gold—and how do they remember the hardships that follow?
In The Argonauts of California, Charles Warren Haskins recalls the gold rush he takes part in. News of gold at Sutter’s Mill draws people west, toward difficult roads and uncertain prospects. His memories bring you into a world where reaching California is itself a trial, before the work of seeking gold can begin.
San Francisco grows from a small port into a crowded boom town. Ships arrive, crews leave for the goldfields, and mining camps make their own rules. Writing decades after these events, Haskins offers a pioneer’s recollections rather than a daily record. Alongside the rush for gold comes another question: how does memory turn hardship into a story?

Gold fever starts as a rumor and a quarrel
The book opens in the winter of 1848 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The narrator, Jo, tells his friend Bill that gold has been found in California. Ships at the wharves are being fitted out to carry passengers cheaply.
Bill is not convinced. He jokes that earthquakes shake gold down among the grass roots. Jo answers that he will go even if he finds only a hatful in a day. Haskins plants the question that runs through the book, which is who really ends up holding the gold.

What is The Argonauts of California about?
It is a memoir of the 1849 gold rush by a forty-niner. Haskins describes the voyage from New Bedford around Cape Horn, life in San Francisco and the Hangtown diggings, and what happened to the miners in the following decades.
Is The Argonauts of California a true story and when was it written?
Yes, it is an eyewitness memoir. Charles Warren Haskins wrote it from memory in the winter of 1887 and 1888 in Idaho. It mixes real names, dates and places with the tall tales miners told around the campfire.
Who are the Argonauts in the title?
The Argonauts are the forty-niners, the gold seekers who traveled to California in 1849 and after. The name echoes the Greek heroes who sailed after the golden fleece, and Haskins uses it for the men who laid the foundation of the state.
