About this book
In the Australian bush, daily work can become danger—and a family must find the courage to keep going.
The Adventurous Seven by Bessie Marchant follows a family facing the demands of the Australian frontier. Open country, hard work and testing weather shape their days. As ordinary struggles grow into real danger, they must endure hardship and rely on one another.
Marchant builds her adventure around plain courage and loyal kin. Here, bravery is not only a matter of facing a sudden threat. It also means patience, shared effort and the will to finish a difficult task. The family’s daily struggles give this tale its sense of purpose.

Seven Plumsteads decide to sail for Australia
The story opens in a crowded village schoolroom in England, where a sweating lecturer from Sydney praises New South Wales. Nobody cheers him harder than the seven Plumstead children. He begins to suspect he is being laughed at, though they simply love every word.
Nealie, the eldest at nineteen, whispers a thought along the row. Their father, Dr. Plumstead, has lived in Australia for nearly seven years, lonely and far away. What if they all went to him and helped him?

What is The Adventurous Seven about?
It follows seven English brothers and sisters who sail to New South Wales to join their father, a doctor. They travel by ship and wagon, meet helpful strangers, and face stampedes, storms, and a surprise at the end of the road.
Who are the seven children in The Adventurous Seven?
They are Nealie, Rupert, Sylvia, Rumple, Don, Billykins, and Ducky, the Plumstead family. Nealie is the eldest and acts as mother, Rupert is lame, Rumple writes poetry, and Ducky is the youngest.
Why does Rumple forget the letter, and why does it matter?
Mr. Runciman writes a letter telling Dr. Plumstead that his children are on their way, and Rumple pockets it instead of posting it. Because it never reaches the father, he is not waiting for his children when they arrive in Australia.
