About this book
What does courage mean when the jungle is home and survival puts a young boy to the test?
Piang is a Moro boy whose home ground is the jungle of the southern Philippine islands. In The Adventures of Piang the Moro Jungle Boy, Florence Partello Stuart places her young hero among the rivers, villages, and wild country of this region. Courage and resourcefulness are at the heart of his adventures.
This children's adventure also offers a glimpse of how an American writer pictures the Philippines for young readers in 1917. Its setting includes the Moro people, the Muslim communities of Mindanao and nearby islands. Read it for its young hero and themes of survival, while keeping its period and American viewpoint in mind.

A ceremony sends two boys into the jungle
The story opens in the hills of Mindanao, where the people of Dato Kali Pandapatan gather in a clearing. Piang, a proud youth in a crimson sash, is believed to be the charm boy, the one chosen to lead the tribe. But a second boy was born under the same star that night. He is Sicto, a boy of mixed blood, with a shambling walk and eyes that never meet anyone's.
Old Pandita Asin, the priest, offers a test. A hermit named Ganassi lives on a far peak, and he will know the true charm boy. Each boy must reach him alone, one by the jungle and hills, the other by the river and lake. Kali tosses his dagger into the air to settle who chooses first. The blade lands point down, so Piang chooses the river. A small slave girl named Papita watches him go.
