About this book
In a land of rough camps and hard choices, a fearless girl's deepest secret is who she really is.
Montana bears the name of a Western region and lives by her own courage. In Marah Ellis Ryan's That Girl Montana, the American frontier offers wide country, danger, and choices that test her nerve. Trouble comes from the land itself and from the people who struggle to control it. Loyalty matters when courage alone may not be enough.
Love brings Montana into contact with people whose backgrounds and habits differ from her own. As feeling grows across those differences, a question runs beneath the adventure: who is Montana, and what does her past hold? This Western romance brings a spirited heroine, hidden identity, and hard choices together in a story where love has differences to overcome.

A girl dives into the river and hides her name
After a railway-station prologue, the main story opens with a rescue. Dan Overton and his friend Max Lyster watch from the bank as a small swimmer plunges into the cold Kootenai after a drowning child. Max takes her for an Indian woman, but Dan insists she is white.
That night Dan crosses the river to the lodge of old Akkomi, the head chief, to learn who she is. He finds a sullen girl of about sixteen with hostile eyes. Akkomi will not name her. He says only that her father is dead and that she has walked a long trail looking for something she has not found.
