About this book

What if a speck of dust tells you more about a crime than a confession?

In R. Austin Freeman's John Thorndyke's Cases, crimes that baffle the police meet a patient investigator. Dr. John Thorndyke is both a London barrister and a medical expert. From his chambers in the Temple, he studies the small physical traces that others overlook, asking not merely what seems likely, but what can be proved.

His friend and junior colleague, Dr. Christopher Jervis, tells these eight mysteries, learning the meaning of clues alongside the reader. The collection brings together puzzling events, worried clients, laboratory work and questions of legal proof. Behind the investigations stands Polton, whose skilled hands prepare the instruments and specimens that help turn observation into evidence.

In short

What can a lonely beach tell you about the people who crossed it? For John Thorndyke, the medical jurist at the heart of this book, a row of footprints reads like a printed page.

Footprints on a lonely beach tell a story

The book opens at Little Sundersley, a remote village on England's east coast. Dr. Jervis is minding a country practice when his friend Thorndyke arrives. On the sand below Sundersley Gap he reads two sets of tracks. The tide marks and the depth of the prints tell him how long the sand has lain untouched and that one man carried a heavy load.

What is John Thorndyke's Cases about?

It is a set of eight detective stories in which Dr. John Thorndyke, a medical jurist, solves crimes by studying footprints, dust, hair, ink and other small physical clues. Dr. Jervis tells the stories and usually follows a step behind.

Who is Dr. Jervis in the Thorndyke stories?

Dr. Jervis is Thorndyke's friend and assistant, a doctor who helps with his legal and scientific work. He tells most of the stories, tries to reason along with the detective and stands in for the curious reader.

Are the methods in the stories real?

Freeman says in his preface that he kept to authentic facts and practical methods, performed all the experiments described and used real specimens for the microphotographs. The cases show ordinary scientific research applied to the detection of crime.
