About this book
What happens when childhood wonder meets a world of hunger, fear and cruelty?
William Blake sets two ways of seeing side by side in this collection of short poems. Songs of Innocence opens with a piper, a valley and a child on a cloud who asks for a song about a lamb. Play and trust fill this world, but shadows fall across it too.
Songs of Experience answers with anger and doubt. Its opening Bard calls to the fallen earth, and Earth speaks back. Across the collection, The Lamb faces The Tyger, while paired versions of The Chimney Sweeper reveal different views of suffering. Blake asks you to feel both innocence and experience, without choosing a simple winner.

Blake builds the book as a pair
The first thing to grasp is that the book is built as a pair. Blake gave the volume a title that speaks of two contrary states of the human soul. Innocence is the world as a trusting child sees it. Experience is the world seen after loss, fear and the rule of others.
The two halves are not a simple story of growing up. Blake lets each state judge the other. Innocence can see a tenderness that Experience misses. Experience can see a cruelty that Innocence cannot yet name. The reader holds both views at once.

What is Songs of Innocence and of Experience about?
It is a book of short poems in two halves. Innocence shows a child's trusting view of lambs, play and a loving God. Experience returns to the same scenes and shows poverty, fear, harsh rules and fierce nature.
What does the title mean by innocence and experience?
Blake calls them two contrary states of the human soul. Innocence is a trusting, joyful way of seeing. Experience is a way of seeing shaped by loss, power and doubt. Each state shows what the other hides.
What is the poem The Tiger really asking?
It asks who could make such a fearful creature, and whether the same maker who made the gentle lamb also made the tiger. Blake poses the question through many short lines and leaves it without an answer.
