About this book
Court affairs, remembered lives and strange happenings share the pages of a scholar’s restless notebook.
In Random Notes from North of the Pond, Wang Shizhen gathers what he hears, reads and sees. A poet and senior official of the early Qing dynasty, he moves between government business and the pleasures of poetry. His short pieces invite you to follow a curious mind rather than a single plot.
This Chinese jotting book, or biji, ranges across four sections: court and government records, accounts of people, remarks on poetry, and strange tales. Officials and scholars appear beside men and women remembered for one act or quality. Sober records give way to unexplained happenings, with no single argument to bind them together.

Rank, seat and ceremony ruled the court
The opening chapters read like a rulebook written by someone who lived inside it. Wang records who sat where, who rode in a sedan chair, and which office ranked above which. In 1667 the commander of the imperial guard petitioned to ride in a covered chair like the ministers. The emperor agreed, and a military man was treated as a civil equal.
Small points mattered because they showed status. At great audiences the scholars of the Hanlin Academy sat above officers of higher rank, because the seating followed a different logic from the pay scale. Wang finds such puzzles fascinating and says so.
