About this book
What if your grand plans keep landing you in trouble—and growing up asks for something harder than adventure?
Katy Carr wants to do something grand. Twelve years old and the eldest of six children, she fills the family home in Burnet with noise, untidy hair and ambitious plans. Her gentle sister Clover helps make those plans work. But Aunt Izzie, who runs the house after their mother's death, values the order Katy so often upsets.
In Susan Coolidge's What Katy Did, invented games, classroom scrapes and family quarrels bring nineteenth-century childhood close. Dr. Carr hopes to guide his daughter's lively spirit gently, while Katy struggles with chores and rules. When her wishes meet Aunt Izzie's ban on the woodshed swing, the story turns toward a deeper question: what does it really mean to be good?

Why would two tiny insects on a rush stalk argue about a girl named Katy? The author sits by a brook one hot day and hears them repeat the same words, Katy did, Katy didn't.

Katy Carr is tall, dreamy, and always in scrapes
In a big square house in Burnet with green shutters lives Dr. Carr with his six children. Their mother died when the youngest was a baby, so his sister, Aunt Izzie, runs the house.
Katy is the oldest and the tallest girl anyone has seen. Her head is so full of schemes that she hardly notices her tangled hair and torn dresses. She makes good resolutions every week and breaks every one. Aunt Izzie is small, neat, and baffled by children who climb and tear and slide down the icehouse roof.
