About this book
What happens when a man who lives to punish others steps into a world he cannot control?
In Heinrich Mann’s Professor Filth, Professor Raat rules his classroom through discipline and fear. His pupils answer with a cruel nickname: Unrat, meaning rubbish or filth. When he suspects that Lohmann and other boys lead a secret life beyond school, he sets out to catch them.
His search takes him through dark streets to the Blue Angel tavern, where Rosa Fröhlich sings. Practical and good natured, she treats the lonely teacher kindly. As his need for control gives way to obsession, Mann exposes a small town that rewards cruelty while fiercely guarding its respectable name.

“Because his name was Raat, the whole school twisted it into Unrat, the German word for filth, and called him Filth.”
In short
Why would a respected teacher of ancient Greek end up lacing a cabaret singer's corset, pouring champagne for his own pupils, and running the wildest house in town? Heinrich Mann asks that question in Professor Filth, a German novel first published in 1905, and he answers it with comedy that slowly turns dark.

A teacher called Filth rules by fear
Professor Raat has taught in the same school for twenty-six years. His pupils have twisted his name into Unrat, meaning filth, and the whole town knows it. He treats every shouted insult as a crime that must be proved. He can prove nothing, so he memorizes faces and waits.
One foggy morning, a heavy country boy, Count von Ertzum, bellows the hated word from a window. Raat takes the stairs in five bounds and sends the boy to the dark cloakroom he calls the hole. Then he sets a trick essay topic and rejoices as the class falls apart. Lohmann, a pale pupil who writes poems, cannot stand it. He rises and says that it smells of filth, and Raat drags him out too.

What is Professor Filth about?
It follows a strict schoolmaster nicknamed Unrat, or Filth. While hunting a pupil who wrote a poem about a cabaret singer, he meets her, falls under her spell, and slowly loses his post, his savings, and his old sense of himself.
Why is he called Unrat or Filth?
His pupils turn his real name, Raat, into Unrat, the German word for filth. The nickname has followed him for twenty-six years, and the story shows how much a single word can hurt, rule, and finally belong to him.
Is Professor Filth the story behind the film The Blue Angel?
Yes. The novel, published in 1905, gave the film The Blue Angel its plot of a teacher and a cabaret singer. The book is wider and darker, with more about the town, the pupils, and the tyrant's mind.
