About this book

What happens when a poet brings the same fierce feeling to a child, a tyrant, and a world of grief?

In Poems, Victor Hugo moves from the bright colours of youth to the tenderness of family life, the anger of exile, and the pain of loss. This collection gathers verse from across his long career. The poet familiar to readers of his novels speaks here through intimate feelings and a large, public voice.

Les Feuilles d'automne turns toward home and family, while La Légende des siècles reaches toward humanity and its stories. Elsewhere, Hugo confronts Louis Napoleon and mourns his daughter Léopoldine. Marriage, children, political upheaval, and bereavement give these poems their roots. Light and darkness return as images of hope and despair.

Early poems start with rescued children and fallen kings

The book opens with Moses on the Nile, a poem dated 1820 and sent to a contest in Toulouse. Iphis bathes with her maidens at dawn and notices a skiff of reeds with a baby inside. She wades out, lifts him from the water, and brings him to Pharaoh. The poem closes on the promise that a single cradle will redeem a people.

What is Victor Hugo's Poems about?

It gathers poems from six decades of Hugo's work. They cover Biblical scenes, ballads, Eastern tales, Napoleon, children, love, the poor, political exile, legends, and the Siege of Paris, plus a few scenes from his plays.

What is The Djinns about?

It is a poem from The Orientals in which a swarm of spirits sweeps past a house at night. The lines grow from two syllables to eight and then shrink again, so the sound rises, passes, and fades away.

Why does Napoleon appear so often in Hugo's poems?

Hugo sees Napoleon as the figure who shaped his age. Early poems admire his glory, and later ones, such as The Morrow of Grandeur, ask what becomes of power. In exile, Hugo turns on Napoleon III instead.
