About this book

What if marriage needs a science—and its most confident expert carries a satirist’s knife?

In The Physiology of Marriage, Complete, Honoré de Balzac turns married life in France into a comic field of study. His voice is cool, assured and often wicked. Behind the jokes lies a world where money, family and reputation shape marriage, and husbands worry about keeping their wives faithful without becoming fools.

These sharp essays move from sheltered girls’ education to the habits and temperaments of husbands and wives. Balzac sorts people into types, borrows the language of government and war, and imagines wives’ tactics alongside husbands’ rules. His dry, teasing humor gives the inquiry its bite.

What you’ll discover

  • Marriage under the knife Watch Balzac treat an intimate bond as a serious contract that demands its own science.
  • The cost of shelter Explore his argument that a girl's sheltered upbringing can help lay the ground for a bad marriage.
  • A taste for types Meet men and women classified by habits, ages and temperaments, with sharp humor close at hand.
  • Household tactics at work Follow husbands' efforts to guard fidelity and wives' small arts of getting their own way.
  • French society in miniature Find scenes, anecdotes and digressions that bring money, family and reputation into the marriage question.

Marriage is a fight to the death

Balzac begins his work with a provocative claim. Marriage, he says, is a fight to the death, and victory, which here means freedom, belongs to the more cunning partner. Nothing in this is new.

What is The Physiology of Marriage about?

It is a comic treatise on marriage and adultery in early nineteenth-century France. Balzac poses as a scientist, counts honest wives, advises husbands on defending their homes, and follows a marriage from the honeymoon to old age in thirty short Meditations.

What does the Minotaur mean in the book?

The Minotaur is Balzac's joking mythological figure for marital infidelity. A man who is minotaurized has a wife who has taken a lover, and the book uses the word to avoid blunt speech in polite company.

Is The Physiology of Marriage meant seriously?

Balzac writes as a mock professor, mixing statistics, aphorisms and anecdotes. Much of his advice is plainly comic, and readers have long treated it as satire, though he keeps the tone ambiguous and says he writes neither for nor against marriage.
