About this book
What if saving a republic means giving one man the power to remake it?
Philip Dru, a young army officer trained at West Point, sees an America where wealth and political machines control government. Elections, legislatures and courts remain, but real power lies elsewhere. As ordinary routes to reform seem blocked, Dru moves toward rebellion.
In Philip Dru: Administrator, Edward Mandell House turns a political story into a plan for governing the United States. Taxes, banks, labor, trade and the Constitution all come under scrutiny. At its heart sits a troubling question: how much power should a reformer hold in the name of fairness?
What you’ll discover

“Labor is no longer to be treated as an inert commodity, bought and sold according to the law of supply and demand.”
In short
What would you do if you saw that the people who own a country's wealth also own its government, and that no ordinary vote could change it? That is the question Philip Dru faces on the day he graduates from West Point in 1920, standing alone under an oak while his classmates greet their families.

A lonely cadet speaks of a coming struggle
The story opens on June 12 of 1920 at West Point. The author says wealth has grown so strong that the few are about to strangle the many. Yet the graduation goes on with its flags and music.
Philip Dru stands apart, because he alone has no family there. His friend Jack Strawn has brought his sister Gloria to meet him. She asks why he would become a soldier in a country that hardly ever fights. Philip answers that he wants to prevent war and be a humble instrument for good.
