About this book

What can a young servant do when the man who employs her refuses to accept her no?

Pamela Andrews is fifteen when her mistress dies, leaving her in the service of the woman’s son, Mr. B. He pursues her despite her refusals. She wants to protect her reputation and return to her parents, but his wealth and position give him power over her daily life.

In Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded, letters and journal entries bring you close to a conscience under pressure. Pamela records encounters, weighs her choices, and wonders whom she can trust. Her parents offer warnings and moral guidance, while her employer treats resistance as something to overcome.

What is Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded about?

Samuel Richardson’s novel follows Pamela Andrews, a young servant whose employer tries to force her into a sexual relationship. Through letters and a journal, she describes her resistance, her attempts to reach her parents, and the struggle to preserve her dignity within a sharply unequal household.

Why is Pamela important in the history of the novel?

Published in 1740, Pamela helped establish the English novel as a form that could closely follow ordinary private life. Richardson gives sustained attention to a servant girl’s thoughts, making her fears, judgments, and moral choices the driving force of the story.

Is Pamela a true story?

Pamela is fiction, although Richardson drew on an anecdote about a servant who married her employer after resisting his advances. Its letters and journal create the impression of a personal record, but Pamela Andrews and the events of the novel belong to Richardson’s story.
