About this book
A vow of vengeance carries an Englishman into an Aztec city where love and loyalty face the coming war.
In H. Rider Haggard's Montezuma's Daughter, Thomas Wingfield leaves the English countryside to pursue the man who wrongs his family. His search takes him through Spain and into Mexico, where the lake city of Tenochtitlan opens before him. Temples, markets and long causeways surround a stranger whose oath gives him purpose—and threatens to harden his heart.
There he meets Otomie, Montezuma's brave and passionate daughter, whose love for Thomas is tested by loyalty to her people. As Hernando Cortes and his men enter the city, an uneasy peace begins to fail. Private vengeance and love become entangled with the Spanish conquest, and Thomas must face what his vow demands in a world at war.

An old man writes to explain his life
The story opens in 1588, in the marketplace at Bungay. Thomas Wingfield, very old, hears that Spain's Armada is beaten. The news stirs a memory of the Queen, who once asked him about his twenty years among the Indians of Anahuac, the land now called Mexico.
He tells the lesson of his life before the tale begins. No wrong can bring about a right, he says, and every wrong falls back on the hand that made it. He points to Cortes, who died poor and disgraced, and to the Aztecs, who fed their gods with human lives and lost their country. He expects Spain to pay for its own cruelty.
